The early Diaclone line consisted on Sci-Fi based vehicles that combined or transformed into a robot. The later line, which eventually was sold in the US as Transformers, was based on real vehicles. So, were they like the GaoGaiGar robots - which can have a pilot but are sentient with personalities (like Transformers), or just machines like the classic Super Robot Combiners like Combattler and Voltes?
