SR Design Sketches that were Altered in the Final Product

Folks, while surfing the web I found this cool drawing of Big Dai X, or Bomber-X as it is known in Europe. To the right you will see the final design, and to the left you will see Nagai's sketch which in my opinion was way cooler than the final product.


Why was a cool head design changed into a less appealing one? We might never know, but it makes me wonder how many design sketches never made it into the final product.

Do you guys know of any? Good or bad sketches, designs, etc, I will sure want to know.

If you ask me, I much rather see Big Dai as an anime instead of "puppet" show. Would've been much cooler imo.

There's tons of Mazinger sketches, but I must say that I'm happy that Toei chose the Mazinger designed they did for the original show and ovas. Not sure I would've been a big fan if they would've stuck to any of the original Go Nagai designs.

The only Mazinger-Z sketches that I recall are the ones that later on materialized as Energer-Z.

I do recall one before that that had a bar stool instead of the motorcycle for Koji to sit on. It was kink off silly.

I do not recall other pre-Toei Mazinger-Z sketches.

Xabungle sketches.


Interesting color combinations, I do like them better than the blue Xabungle that we all know.

About Big Dai X maybe that's why they didn't go for the meaner look cuz it was a puppet show? I realize all these were aimed at kids but I think that show with the puppet thing needed a friendlier robot? As for Xabungke he looks great in the other colors but frankly I prefer .....
